  • Description

The crew of Skylab 11, in orbit 270 miles (432 kms) out from Earth, continue to study the planet beneath them, the space about them and the odd effects of weightlessness.

On Friday (7 September) Commander Alan Bean, Or. Owen Garriott, and Major Jack Lousma observed a smoking volcano on the island of Sardinia from their lofty perch. With the aid of a high magnification camera lens, they locked onto their subject, zoomed in to an equivalent height of about 40,000 feet (12,000 metres) and looked "right down the smokestack."
Dr. Garriott also carried out some experiment using liquid bubbles and showing their reaction to weightlessness.

The spaceman wore jackets for a good deal of the day because the temperature in the space craft dropped to 58 degrees Fahrenheit due to that sun's angle.
