    JANUARY 2ND AND APRIL 29TH ARE THE TWO DAYS IN THE YEAR WHEN THE PALACE IS THROWN OPEN TO THE PEOPLE.ON THIS OCCASION IT WAS THE EMPEROR, THE EMPRESS, THE CROWN PRINCE AND HIS CONSORT, AND THE EMPEROR'S YOUNGEST SON, PRINCE YOSHINOMIYA, WHO APPEARED ON THE BALCONY TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE CHEERS AND GREETINGS OF THE CROWD ASSEMBLED BELOW.

    SEVEN TIMES DURING THE DAY THE ROYAL FAMILY STOOD ON THE BALCONY TO WAVE TO THE CROWD AS IT ROARED ITS APPROVAL AND WISHES THEM LONG LIFE.THE WELL-WISHERS WERE ALL IN FORMAL WEAR, THE APPROPRIATE DRESS DURING THE JAPANESE NEW YEAR.
