Background: Kenya is to issue a new set of ??? coins to mark the 75th birthday of the president, Mr Jomo Kenyatta. The coins will be in six denominations and will bear Kenyatta's head.
The coins will be put into circulation on Saturday, April 15. Denominations of the new coins are five cents, 10 cents, 25 cents, 50 cents, one shilling and two shillings. They will be supplemented by an issue of three gold coins in ??? ??? denominations of 500 shillings, 250 shillings and 100 shillings.
At a special presentation ceremony held in State House, Nairobi Mr Kenyatta was presented with a set of the new coins by Mr Leon Baranski, the Polish governor of the Bank of Kenya. Also present at the ceremony was Mr James Gichuru, the Minister of Finance, Mr D.N. Ndegwa, the governor-designate of the Bank and Mr R. K. Barton, general manager of the Central Bank of Kenya.
Previously all Kenyan coins have borne the head of King George VI or the crown. They have also had holes through the middle to facilitate carrying them on a string.
