  • Description

WARM SPRING-LIKE WEATHER AT INNSBRUCK TODAY (MONDAY) CAUSED RISING ANXIETY AMONGST WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES OFFICIALS, WHO HAD TO CANCEL TWO EVENTS BECAUSE OF THE THAW AFFECTING THE BOB AND LUGE (TOBOGGAN) RUNS. WITH TEMPERATURES INCREASING, WATER WAS RUNNING DOWN THE ICY WALS OF THE LUGE TRACK, WHERE THE FINALS OF THE MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SINGLES SHOULD HAVE BEEN HELD TODAY.

BOTH WERE POSTPONED AND TRAINING RUNS FOR THE FOUR-MAN BOB EVENT ON AN ADJOINING RUN ALSO HAD TO BE CANCELLED. ALSO CALLED OFF WERE PRACTICE RUNS FOR THE TWO-MAN LUGE CONTEST, DUE TO BE HELD ON WEDNESDAY.

OLYMPIC OFFICIALS TELEPHONED CORTINA D' AMPEZZO AND ST. MORITZ TO ASK IF IT WOULD BE POSSIBLE TO TRANSFER THE EVENTS THERE. BUT THEY WERE TOLD THAT A THAW HAD ALSO SET IN AT THE ITALIAN RUN AND THE SWISS TRACK WAS NOT READY.

OFFICIALS HOPED THAT SUB-ZERO TEMPERATURES AT INNSBRUCK TONIGHT MIGHT SOLVE THE PROBLEM, BUT WEATHER FORECASTERS SEE NO IMMEDIATE CHANGE IN THE WEATHER.
