The leader of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation, Mr. Yasser Arafat, has completed a surprise two-day visit to Yugoslavia. During the visit he had talks with both President Tito and Prime Minister Veselin Djuranovic, who gave a banquet in his honour on Tuesday evening (27 December).
SYNOPSIS: After a state welcome and a day of talks in the capital of Belgrade with the Prime Minister, Mr. Arafat and the PLO delegation travelled to the island of Brioni where he was given a warm welcome by the 85-year-old President at his holiday home. Mr. Arafat and the President spent over an hour together in discussion.
No details of the talks were released officially, but Palestinian officials said they focused on PLO activities and the organisation's future. The previous evening in Belgrade, Mr. Arafat said Israel and the United States were trying to impose their own solution in the Middle East. The Palestinians wanted peace, but only on acceptable terms. Reuters News Agency said Mr. Arafat would be visiting a second East European country, possibly Rumania.
