    JAPANESE DEMONSTRATORS SCUFFLED WITH POLICE DURING A PROTEST AGAINST THE EXPECTED VISIT OF UNITED STATES NUCLEAR SUBMARINES AND WARSHIPS. THE DEMONSTRATION TOOK PLACE ON SUNDAY AT THE U.S. NAVAL BASE AT YOKOSUKA, 40 MILES (64 KMS) SOUTH-WEST OF TOKYO.

    ABOUT 6,000 DEMONSTRATORS TOOK PART, MOSTLY TRADE UNIONIST. THEY ALSO PROTESTED AGAINST AMERICAN INVOLVEMENT IN VIETNAM, WHERE THE WARSHIPS - FROM THE SEVENTH FLEET - HAVE BEEN PATROLLING.

    AMONG THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE 300 STUDENTS, WHO TRIED TO APPROACH THE GATES OF THE AMERICAN BASE. POLICE ACTED SWIFTLY. SCUFFLES BROKE OUT, BUT THERE WERE NO INJURIES OR ARRESTS.

    AMERICAN NUCLEAR SUBMARINES HAVE VISITED JAPAN BEFORE, TOUCHING OFF VIOLENT DEMONSTRATIONS. IF THE LATEST VISIT IS CARRIED OUT, THE JAPANESE SOCIALIST AND COMMUNIST PARTIES ARE EXPECTED TO MOBILISE A MILLION DEMONSTRATORS TO PROTEST.
