    IN FORTY-FOUR JAPANESE CITIES AND TOWNS YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) MORE THAN ONE AND A HALF MILLION PEOPLE ATTENDED A SERIES OF DEMONSTRATIONS PROTESTING AGAINST UNITED STATES INVOLVEMENT IN SOUTH VIETNAM.

    THE LARGEST SINGLE DEMONSTRATION WAS HELD AT THE MEIJI PARK SHRINE IN TOKYO, WHERE MORE THAN 30-THOUSAND PEOPLE MARCHED.

    THE DEMONSTRATIONS WERE ORGANISED BY THE GENERAL COUNCIL OF JAPANESE TRADE UNIONS.

    THERE WAS A MINOR CLASH BETWEEN DEMONSTRATORS AND RIOT POLICE OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY. ABOUT THREE HUNDRED DEMONSTRATORS ATTEMPTED TO MARCH ON THE EMBASSY, BUT WERE PUSHED BACK BY POLICE.

    IN THE EVENING ANOTHER THREE-THOUSAND DEMONSTRATORS ATTEMPTED TO MARCH ON THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY AFTER A RALLY IN MEIJI PARK. HUNDREDS OF RIOT POLICE ARMED WITH TRUNCHEONS BLOCKED THE PATH OF THE DEMONSTRATORS, WHO DISPERSED AFTER A SERIES OF MINOR SCUFFLES WITH POLICE.

    THE JAPANESE DEMONSTRATIONS COINCIDED WITH ANTI-VIETNAM DEMONSTRATIONS IN A NUMBER OF WORLD CAPITALS, INCLUDING WASHINGTON, COPENHAGEN, PARIS, AMSTERDAM, TEL AVIV AND OSLO.
