  • Description

TENSION REMAINED HIGH IN THE MINING AREAS OF BELGIUM TODAY (WEDNESDAY) IN THE WAKE OF RIOTS EARLIER THIS WEEK BY MINERS PROTESTING AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT'S DECISION TO CLOSE UNECONOMICAL MINES. THE RIOTING BROKE OUT IN THE VICINITY OF WINTERSLAG, ABOUT 50 MILES (80 KMS) EAST OF BRUSSELS. SOLDIERS AND POLICE STOOD GUARD OVER THE MINES AT WINTERSLAG, WATERSCHEI AND ZWARTBERG ON WEDNESDAY FEARING MORE TROUBLE, BUT NONE CAME.

POLICE AND PARATROOPS ARE GUARDING IMPORTANT MINES- AS WELL AS ELECTRIC PLANTS AND RAILWAYS - IN CASE OF MORE RIOTING. ACCESS TO THE MINES REMAINS VERY DIFFICULT. ROADS HAVE BEEN CLOSED BY TREE-STUMPS AND LARGE BLOCKS OF PAVEMENT.

STRIKE PICKETS, CARRYING PLACARDS DEPLORING THE DECISION TO CLOSE SOME OF THE MINES, ARE STILL ON DUTY OUTSIDE THE MINE GATES.

POLICE FEAR MORE VIOLENCE TOMORROW (THURSDAY) WHEN TWO MINERS KILLED DURING THE RIOTS WILL BE BURIED. HUNDREDS OF MINERS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND THE FUNERAL.
