  • Description

FILM FROM GOA, DEC 20, SHOWS INDIAN TROOPS AND GOAN CIVILIANS AT THE NORTHERN GOA-INDIA BORDER, AND IN PANJIM THE CAPITAL, TWO DAYS AFTER INDIAN UNITS HAD STARTED A THREE-PRONGED DRIVE INTO THE PORTUGUESE TERRITORY.

AS INDIAN SOLDIERS KEPT WATCH AT THE BORDER VILLAGE OF TEREKHOL, LEAFLETS WERE DISTRIBUTED TO THE POPULATION. THE INDIAN AUTHORITIES CONFIRMED IN OFFICE THE MEMBERS OF THE PORTUGUESE CIVIL SERVICE, WHILE VARIOUS DEPARTMENTS OF THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT WERE MOVING IN TO HELP WITH THE ADMINISTRATION. AN INDIAN MILITARY GOVERNOR, MAJOR-GENERAL K.P. CANDETH, IS NOW THE SUPREME LOCAL AUTHORITY, BUT THE COURTS OF LAW ARE FOR THE PRESENT TO CONTINUE THEIR WORK.

CHEERING GOANS WERE DRIVING THROUGH VILLAGES IN A TRUCK, DECLARING THEIR SOLIDARITY WITH THE INDIANS. OUR FILM SHOWS LITTLE EVIDENCE OF ANY WARLIKE ACTIVITY, APART FROM A FEW ABANDONED ARMOURED VEHICLES AND SOME WRECKED BUILDINGS WHICH, IT IS CLAIMED, THE RETREATING PORTUGUESE LEFT BEHIND. INDIA'S PRIME MINISTER NEHRU, WHO DESCRIBED PORTUGUESE RESISTANCE AS "EXTRAORDINARILY LIGHT", SAID CASUALTIES ON BOTH SIDES HAD BEEN VERY SMALL. CAPTURED PORTUGUESE TROOPS WERE TO BE INTERNED IN A CAMP OUTSIDE GOA, PROBABLY AT BELGAUM.

IN PANJIM, THE EXCITEMENT WAS DYING DOWN AFTER A DAY OF CHEERING AND CELEBRATING AND LIFE IN THE CITY WAS SLOWLY RETURNING TO NORMAL. ONLY THE SHOPS REMAINED CLOSED FOR THE DAY. THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT HAS ISSUED ORDERS DECLARING PORTUGUESE AND INDIAN CURRENCIES LEGAL TENDER, BUT PROHIBITING THE IMPORT OF PORTUGUESE MONEY. THE EXPORT OF GOLD, JEWELLERY AND FOREIGN EXCHANGE HAS BEEN BANNED AND THE PORTUGUESE BANCO NACIONAL ULTRAMARINO CLOSED PENDING EXAMINATION OF ITS AFFAIRS BY THE RESERVE BANK OF INDIA.

IN DELHI, THE SAME DAY, PRESIDENT RAJENDRA PRASAD SENT GREETINGS TO THE PEOPLE OF GOA ON THEIR "SUCCESSFUL STRUGGLE FOR FREEDOM". HE SAID: "WITH THE ENDING OF THIS LAST VESTIGE OF COLONIALISM ON THE MAINLAND OF INDIA THE INJUSTICE WHICH WAS INHERENT IN THE EARLIER SITUATION HAS ENDED."
