Background: Belfast erupted into another night of violence on Friday (3 July) as British peace-keeping troops and rioters fought gun battles in a Catholic section of the Northern Ireland capital. Three civilians were killed and scores injured before a 10.30 p.m. curfew was clamped on embattled city by the Army.

The shooting began as 1500 troops on foot and in armoured cars moved into the maze of grubby back streets in the Catholic Falls Road area where an arms cache had been found in one of the houses. Two of the civilians were shot dead and a third killed by an armoured car during the evening's violence.

In the early hours of the evening British troops were attacked by gangs of youths hurling sticks of gelignite and home-made hand grenades. They retaliated with CS riot gas -- now used in much greater concentration since last weekend's riots in which nine people died.

There were several bomb explosions -- one in the street outside the offices of the Protestant newspaper The News Letter just before midnight. Seven members of the staff and a man in street were injured.
