  • Description

Admiral Carrero Blanco, widely tipped as President Franco's successor, left Madrid's Barajas Airport on Wednesday (11 November) to represent Spain in Paris at the memorial service to the late General de Gaulle. He was farewelled by Foreign Minister, Lopez Bravo.

The 67-year-old Admiral was named Vice-President of the Spanish Government in September 1967. As a destroyer commander he served with General Franco's forces during the Civil War. In Spain observers believe that if General Franco should at any time step down from power, Admiral Blanco could well be nominated as his successor... perhaps as prime Minister. He was frequently deputised for General Franco and is known to be favoured by him. At the airport Admiral Blanco was accorded a guard of honour which he inspected before boarding his aircraft.
