    TRANSCRIPT:

NATHAN (SEQ 4): "Many people without a choice are risking their lives right now in Lebanon. They are very sensitive. A lot of innocent people are dying while the world is silent. There are a lot of people in this part of the world who care and show concern and are worried about what happens. Because any insecurity among our neighbouring countries can creep all the way into our country and therefore I feel people are coming voluntarily. The only insurance we have is the fact that we believe and hope that men will start reasoning with each other rather than fight with each other."

REPORTER: "How do you expect the ship to effect the peace process?"

NATHAN: "Well to show that people care. It is a gesture of good will and I think what this area needs more than anything else is some act of magnanimity and some acts to show that people here are concerned even though the whole world is very tired and do not seem to care what is happening."

Abie Nathan and his crewmen planned to unload the medical supplies and equipment, along with the lollipops, onto lighters from Beirut. They began broadcasting peace messages and pop music, but no lighters came to take the gifts. He called to newsmen in a launch in Beirut Bay that he wanted the Red Cross to come aboard. Instead, the peace ship was banned from Lebanese waters by the Lebanese Director-General of Public Security, Farouk Abul-Lameh. The 'Voice of Peace' was warned off by a Lebanese gun-boat.

Background: An Israeli peace campaigner Mr. Abie Nathan has been frustrated in his efforts to land supplies in war-torn Beirut. Lebanese authorities have banned his ship from their waters, which he entered with his peace ship on Wednesday (9 August). Mr. Nathan had attracted considerable voluntary support for his peace mission.

SYNOPSIS: Among the supplies loaded aboard the floating radio station at Ashdod in Israel was a new ambulance, bought with voluntary donations to his 'Voice of Peace' campaign. The crew are all volunteers. They loaded medical supplies, and 30,000 lollipops for the children of Beirut. Abie Nathan was determined to make the potentially dangerous trip, although no-one would insure his ship.
