Background: TWENTY FIVE SHIPS OF THE BRITISH FAR EAST FLEET AND THE UNITED STATES SEVENTH FLEET, HEADED BY THE AIRCRAFT CARRIERS "ARK ROYAL" AND "CORAL SEA", ARE STANDING BY IN HONG KONG HARBOUR IN CASE THEY ARE NEEDED IN CONNECTION WITH THE S.E.A.T.O. FORCE NOW IN THAILAND.

THE 50,000-TONS BRITISH CARRIER "ARK ROYAL" AND HER FOUR ESCORT VESSELS WERE TO HAVE VISITED JAPAN, BUT THE ADMIRALTY HAS INSTRUCTED HER TO REMAIN AT HONG KONG. AFTER ROUTINE EXERCISES AT SEA, THE "ARK ROYAL" RETURNED TO HONG KONG, WHERE SHE WAS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, AND HER CREW GAVE BLOOD TO THE RED CROSS AND ENJOYED THE UNUSUAL AMENITIES OF SHORE-LEAVE IN HONG KONG ... LIKE RIDING IN A RICKSHAW.

BECAUSE OF HERESIZE, THE 63,000-TONS US CARRIER "CORAL SEA" IS ANCHORED OUTSIDE THE HARBOUR. WITH HER WERE THE CRUISER "U.S.S. ST.PAUL" AND SEVERAL AMERICAN DESTROYERS.
