  • Description

The Mona Lisa brought out the art lovers in mobs Thursday (7 February) as she was exhibited at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art. School children and grownups poured into the Museum, but when the doors were first opened, a taxi cab driver led them in.

Joseph Lasky, a 45 year old taxi driver got up at 4:30 in the morning and was in line at 6:00 A.M. Four hours of standing at the barricades and he then led the crowd in at the 10 A.M. opening.

Lasky's comment after seeing the painting..."This is a marvellous event for New York. It's a masterpiece and everybody should see it."...Among the ooh's and aah's that came up as the crowds pushed against the rail ten feet from the painting were: "Her mouth is very pretty...she's very happy, it might have been her birthday...

Thirty policemen were on duty to protect the Leonardo Da Vinci painting. It has been hung twenty feet high on a 15th century Spanish grill work screen. Half-a-million persons saw the painting when it was exhibited for a month in Washington, D.C., and it is obvious that large numbers will view it during the month-long exhibition in New York.

Two housewives who saw it Thursday had driven more than 150 miles from Massachusetts. The only unhappy note was struck at the United nations. French Ambassador Herve Alphand reportedly objected to the seating arrangement for a preview showing Wednesday night and several U.N. officials failed to appear. Mona Lisa, however, just kept on smiling.
