    THE RACE WAS THE FIRST OF THE 11-RACE SERIES FOR THE 1967 WORLD DRIVERS' CHAMPIONSHIP. RODRIGUEZ, DRIVING A COOPER MASERATI, TOOK CONTROL WHEN LOVE (BRABHAM CLIMAX) MADE A PIT STOP WITH ONLY SIX LAPS LEFT. JOHN SURTEES (HONDA), BRITAIN'S FORMER WORLD CHAMPION, WAS THIRD.

    THE HEAT AND THE ALTITUDE TOLD HEAVILY, AND ONLY EIGHT OF THE 18 STARTERS COMPLETED THE 80 LAPS ROUND THE 2.5 MILE (4.02 KILOMETRES) CIRCUIT. DRIVERS FORCED TO RETIRE INCLUDED JO BONNIER OF SWEDEN (COOPER-MASERATI), JOCHEN RINDT OF AUSTRIA (COOPER-MASERATI) DAN GURNEY OF THE UNITED STATES (AMERICAN EAGLE) JO SIFFERT OF SWITZERLAND (COOPER-MASERATI).

    LOVE PULLED UP FROM THE MINOR POSITIONS TO TAKE SECOND PLACE BEHIND DENNY HULME, THE NEW ZEALAND NUMBER TWO BRABHAM-REPCO DRIVER. HULME RETIRED LESS THAN 20 LAPS FROM THE FINISH AND LOVE MANAGED TO HOLD ON TO THE LEAD UNTIL FORCED TO PULL INTO THE PITS FOR PETROL.
