  • Description

It appears that the canister described as radio-active, which was washed up on the west coast of Ireland, has turned out to be a hoax.

That's the opinion of two American Navy officers who flew back to Prestwick Airport in Scotland with the canister, and identified it as an ordinary fire extinguisher, similar to those used aboard ships.

But they rejected any possibility that the extinguished could have come from the American nuclear submarine THRESHER, lost in the Atlantic three years ago. The silver-painted cylinder - about two feet long - carried various words hand-written in red and black paint. One of the officers said, "It looks as though we've been hoaxed".
