    WOOK-TV OPENED ITS PROGRAMMING WITH A SPECIAL FIVE-HOUR PRODUCTION...FEATURING NEGRO LIONEL HAMPTON AND HIS BAND AND GUITARIST CHARLIE BYRD. THE STATION OWNER AND MANAGER ARE WHITE, BUT MOST OF THE EMPLOYEES ARE NEGROES.

    WOOK'S PROGRAMMES AND COMMERCIALS ARE AIMED AT WASHINGTON'S LARGE NEGRO POPULATION. FIFTY-FOUR PER CENT OF THE CITY'S NEARLY ONE-MILLION RESIDENTS ARE NEGRO...THE HIGHEST PROPORTION OF NEGROES IN ANY MAJOR CITY IN THE COUNTRY. THE NATION'S CAPITAL IS THE ONLY MAJOR CITY IN THE U-S WHERE NEGROES OUTNUMBER WHITES.
