  • Description

A week of almost continuous fog has seriously interfered with the normally very heavy shipping traffic between world ports and the great Dutch and European continental port of Rotterdam.

Entry for shipping into Rotterdam is by way of the Hook of Holland harbour and the New Waterway (Nieuwe Waterweg) canal. At times, the fog has been so thick as to prevent any ships from entering or leaving the Hook and large numbers of ships have had to anchor in the coast waters outside the harbour: at other times, the fog has thinned, or lifted, just long enough to allow ships to move very slowly in or out.

Many outgoing ships without radar have had to drop anchor once they have cleared the Hook harbour because the dense fog has made it unsafe for them to proceed further on their voyages.
