Background: Dar Es Salaam, capital of Tanzania, is making a substantial contribution to Zambia's efforts to cut reliance on traditional routes through white ruled South African countries for its exports.

Last year the Dar Es Salaam copper yard handled more than 230,000 tons of Zambian copper, more than a third of that country's total production. In May of this year Dar Es Salaam handled an all time high of some 33,000 tons. When the Chinese built railway from the Zambian Copperbelt to Dar Es Salaam harbour is completed in the late 1970's the copper yard is expected to be able to handle Zambia's entire copper production.

Zambia, the world's third largest producer of copper, has recently begun its first manufacturing activity using the ore as raw material, and this, plus the refined metal is at the moment being brought to Tanzania by trucks of the Zambia-Tanzania road service.

On arrival at the Dar Es Salaam copper yard the trucks usually carrying 14 tons of copper in goes, are unloaded either by fork lift trucks or crane. The dirty bars, soiled by fuel oil carried by the trucks, are then separated and cleaned by water and steam. They are then stacked in piles, waiting shipment to their destinations.

Much of the copper is now being shipped to the People's Republic of China in the Chinese ships which are bringing in equipment for the new railway, the link which will break the Zambian copper industry away from any reliance on White ruled South African countries.
