Background: The annual flower fair in Canton was held on the eve of the traditional Spring Festival.
The fair was held at 4 different places in Canton this year so that more people could see the beautiful flowers which were selected from state farms and people's communes in the city suburbs as well as from different parts of the country. A fine collection of renowned flowers both from North and South China greeted the visitors.
Last year, two typhoons in Kwangtung damaged some of the flower beds out commune members and horticulturists improved their methods of cultivation to make this year's fair richer in variety over 1964. The price of the flowers have also gone down. More than a million and 600 thousand flower plants were sold at this year's fair.
Other attractions at the fair were the gold fish and flower vase exhibits.
A steady flow of people went to the fair which lasted throughout all three days of the festival holidays.
