  • Description

President Tito of Yugoslavia, the 81-year-old founding father of non-alignment, arrived in New Delhi on Thursday (January 24) for talks with leaders of two other non-aligned nations - India and Sri Lanka.

Welcomed at the airport by Indian President V. V. Giri, Marshal Tito was scheduled to have at least two rounds of talks with Indian Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi. His five-day visit coincided with that of the Sri Lankap Rime Minister, Mrs, Sirimavo Bandaranaike, and they were expected to meet for informal discussions.

There have been reports that President Tito wants to sound out opinion for a non-aligned meeting on the oil crisis and other international problems.

One of the President's first engagements was to lay a wreath at the memorial to the Indian independence leader Mahatma Gandhi. Another highlight of his visit was the presentation of the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding -- an award commemorating his old friend and ally in the world non-aligned movement.
