The Soviet Union got off to a bad start when their captain, Alexander Pavlev, was disqualified for breaking the tape before the start of the first race. The Swedish rider, Bength Jansson, who rides for Hackney, went on to a clear win. In the second race a member of the Soviet team, Vladimir Gordeev, emerged as a new star when he snatched a thrilling win from Sweden's Soren Sjosten. This match was part of the first-ever World Cup Speedway championships in which all the major speedway nations are taking part - Australia, New Zealand, Norway-Denmark, Poland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union. The semi-finals are on July 11, and then the two top-scoring teams will meet in the final at Wembley Stadium in London on July 14.

SYNOPSIS: The Soviet Union got off to a demoralizing start in their World Cup Speedway match with Sweden at Hackney Stadium in London on Friday. Their captain, Alexandra Pavlov, was disqualified for breaking the tape before the first race.

In the first race Bengt Jansson, the Hackney rider performing on his home circuit, and Olle Nygren raced for Sweden, and only Anatoly Kuzmin for the Soviet Union. Jansson soon went to a commanding lead showing the kind of speed which was to amass him 12 individual points by the end of the evening.

Among the other countries competing in this first-ever World Cup speedway competition are Australia, and a combined Norway Denmark team, New Zealand, Poland and the United Kingdom. Jansson helped Sweden towards the semi-finals by comfortably winning the race.

He also delighted his local supporters among the 10,000 crowd.

In the second race Lofqvist and Sjosten lined up for Sweden and Gordeev and Khlinovsky for the Soviet Union. The four top-scoring countries go through to the semi-finals and then two go on to the finals at Wembley Stadium on July 14th. Soviet hopes were raised by a fast-developing star, Vladimir Gordeav. Wearing the white helmet, he moved into second place behind Sjosten.

Eventually the Swedes went on to win by the comfortable margin of 49 points to 29, but Gordeev ended the evening as top individual scorer with thirteen points.
