  • Description

MIKHAIL DOMOGATSKIH, THE NAIROBI-BASED CORRESPONDENT FOR THE RUSSIAN NEWSPAPER PRAVDA, LEFT KENYA YESTERDAY, (13 APRIL) BRANDED PERSONA NON GRATA BY THE KENYA GOVERNMENT.

ON THURSDAY HE WAS HANDED A LETTER FROM THE KENYA IMMIGRATION DEPARTMENT GIVING HIM FORTY-EIGHT HOURS TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY. HE WAS GIVEN NO REASON FOR THE ORDER, WHICH SIMPLY STATED THAT IT WAS NECESSARY FOR KENYA NATIONAL INTERESTS.

HE LEFT KENYA BY AIR LAST NIGHT, JUST TWELVE HOURS AFTER THE HURRIED DEPARTURE OF THE FIRST SECRETARY OF THE RUSSIAN EMBASSY IN KENYA, MR VICTOR ELISEEV. MR ELISEEV WAS ALSO GIVEN NOTICE TO QUIT ON THURSDAY, AND RUSSIAN DIPLOMATIC SOURCES DECLINED TO COMMENT ON THE DEPORTATIONS. THE RUSSIANS HAD ASKED FOR AIRPORT SECURITY MEN TO PREVENT PHOTOGRAPHERS SHOOTING MR ELISSEV'S DEPARTURE.

MR DOMOGATSKIH TOLD CAMERAMEN THAT HE HAD NO IDEA WHY HE HAD BEEN ORDERED OUT. 'DURING THE FIVE YEARS I HAVE BEEN HERE I HAVE NOT WRITTEN A SINGLE WORD CRITICISM OF THE KENYA GOVERNMENT,' HE SAID. ONLY SIX MONTHS AGO HE HAD COLLECTED A WORK PERMIT FOR TWO YEARS.

THE FORTY-FIVE-YEAR OLD RUSSIAN JOURNALIST HAS WRITTEN TWO BOOKS 'BURNING SPEAR', WHICH "EXPLAINED" THE NATIONAL LIBERATION MOVEMENT IN KENYA, AND ANOTHER BOOK ABOUT EAST AFRICA.
