  • Description

Orly-West, a new terminal area being added to the existing facilities at Orly Airport near Paris, will be put into service by the end of this year.

The existing facilities at Orly, put into service in 1961, were built to receive 6 million passengers a year, but because of the increasing popularity of air travel, and the use of Jumbo Jets, 9,184,000 passengers pass through the airport. Although new buildings have been added on, it was decided in 1966 that a new terminal area was needed, and construction began in October 1967.

The new terminus, will when completed, have facilities to handle from 7 to 8 million passengers a year. Orly-West will provide an intermediary terminal between the "old" Orly and one at Roissy-en-France, which will open in 1973.

Three underground floors are being devoted to car-parks, providing a total capacity of 4,500 vehicles. The actual terminal building will be built in two sections, and aircraft will be able to surround the building on three sides, providing easy off-loading and boarding facilities. The new building will be entirely air-conditioned.

New roads have also been built providing the best possible access to the airport.
