  • Description

RIOT TROOPS QUELLED A RIOT THAT STARTED OUTSIDE SAIGON'S MAIN PAGODA WHEN A VIETNAMESE SOLDIER WAS SHOT DEAD. TWO AMERICAN VEHICLES WERE BURNED BY THE CROWD WHICH BLAMED THE SHOOTING ON AN AMERICAN CONVOY PASSING THE VIEN HOA DAO PAGODA.

THE MOB OUTSIDE THE VIEN HOA DAO PAGODA, HEADQUARTERS OF BUDDHIST RESISTANCE TO THE SAIGON MILITARY GOVERNMENT, BURNED A UNITED STATES MILITARY JEEP AND AN AMERICAN CIVILIAN PICK-UP TRUCK. THE OCCUPANTS OF BOTH VEHICLES FLED BUT THE AMERICAN SOLDIER DRIVING THE JEEP WAS PUMMELLED BY THE CROWD. HE EVENTUALLY ESCAPED INTO THE NEARBY ALLIED MILITARY HEADQUARTERS.

VIETNAMESE PARATROOPERS QUELLED THE RIOT WITH TEAR GAS AND PUSHED THE CROWD BACK TOWARDS THE PAGODA.

A UNITED STATES MILITARY SPOKESMAN IN SAIGON SAID LATER THAT AN AMERICAN ARMY PRIVATE FIRED THE SHOT THAT KILLED THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE SOLDIER. THE AMERICAN FIRED HIS RIFLE AT THE GROUND BUT THE BULLET APPARENTLY RICOCHETED.
