The Prime Minister of the Republic of Yemen, Mr Mohsen el-Aini, arrived in Algiers on Friday evening (17 March) for talks with Algerian leaders. He was met on arrival by the Algerian Foreign Minister, M. Abdelaziz Bouteflika
The visit was one of a series between Yemeni and Algerian leaders on matters of common interest, but coincided with a deterioration in relations between the Republic of Yemen and the People Republic of Yemen (South Yemen).
South Yemen's Minister of the Interior, Mr Mohamed Selah Mutea, had arrived in Algiers earlier in the week, and the two men met yesterday (Saturday) at a lunch given by President Houari Boumedienne.
Observers commented that it appeared Algeria was acting as mediator in the dispute between Sanaa and Aden, although no statement to this effect was released. Mr el-Aini, who also holds the Yemeni portfolios of foreign affairs and defence, left Algiers for Tripoli after the Saturday talks.
