  • Description

Youth group affiliated with all of Greece's political parties joined workers in a mass demonstration in the port city of Piraeus, near Athens, Thursday (20 February) against the unilateral partition of Cyprus by the island's Turkish Cypriots.

The demonstration, in Piraeus's main Korais Square, was timed to coincide with Thursday's opening of a debate on the Cyprus issue by the United Nations Security Council. It also followed by one day a mass work stoppage and anti-partition parades throughout the Greek sector of Cyprus by Greek Cypriots.

In the Piraeus demonstration, the protesters shouted anti-Turkish and anti-American slogans and carried placards reading "Greece Out of NATO", "Seek Help from Russia", "Makarios to Moscow" and "Americans Out".

The leader of the Turkish-Cypriot community in Cyprus, Rauf Denktash, announced the creation of a separate Turkish-Cypriot state last week. He said he would preside over a constituent assembly to administer his own community -- and late Wednesday (19 February) the Turkish administration decided to form a 50-member Assembly while awaiting further talks on a joint central government.
