  • Description

French President Charles de Gaulle - on the second day of his four-day State visit to London, Apr 6 - made an unscheduled call at the London residence of Britain's war-time leader, Sir Winston Churchill.

Cameras flashed as Sir Winston and Lady Churchill greeted the President and his wife at the door. The party went inside for a friendly 25-minute conversation between the two men whose relations have not always been so cordial.

Sir Winston Churchill once called General de Gaulle the "Constable of France", and the General wrote to the British leader "you are the war effort". In their war memoirs both men paid great tribute to each other.
