Background: VISNEWS filmed State troopers taking over at the local prison in Walpole, Massachusetts, March 7 when a riot broke out among the inmates.

Firing machine-guns the troopers stormed a workshop building and rescued from six rebel convicts a group of seven hostages including the prisons's warden and its Roman Catholic chaplain.

While the ringleader of the mutineers bargained with officials, threatening to burn the bound and petrol-soaked hostages alive unless the main prison gates were opened, 50 State troopers shot their way into the workshop and forced the rioters to surrender.

There were no serious casualties.
