Background: On the fourth day (Monday, 4 September) of the Olympic Yachting Regatta in Kiel Bay in the Baltic Sea, Flying Dutchman and Tempest competitors took advantage of near-perfect conditions. After two rest days the field made the most of strong sunshine and a 16 to 18-knot westerly breeze, as they fought out the fifth races. At the end of the day Britain's Rodney Pattison looked set to take the gold medal in the Flying Dutchman class and fellow-Briton Alon Warren was well-placed among the Tempests. The final races were due to be sailed on Tuesday (5 September).
