    On the third night (September 1) of the Iranian Festival of Arts held at Persepolis, Shiraz, one of the highlights of the evening was 24-year-old Debu Chandhuri, from Bengal, one of the younger generation's leading sitar players.

    Born on May 30, 1935, Debu (full name, Debabrata) received his early training from Ustad Mushtag Ali Khan and made his public debut at 13. In 1963, he made his first national radio broadcast and today is rated an "A Grade Artist" on All India Radio.

    Chandhuri plays both the Alap and Gat in the traditional "Senia" style. Apart from his popularity as a performer, Debu is a well-known teacher of music at both the Faculty of Music of the University of Delhi and at Bharatiya Kala Kendra in New Delhi.
