The Algerian President Houari Boumedienne has attended the event since it began. But this year he was unable to attend because of a Ministerial Council meeting in Constantine to consider the special problems of Eastern Algeria.

SYNOPSIS: In the Olympic Stadium in Algeria's capital Algiers, on Thursday - Algerians were celebrating the eleventh anniversary of their country's independence from France.

Thousands came to watch the Youth Festival -- which traditionally marks the occasion.

Young soldiers of the Algerian Army made the scene even more colourful.

General de Gaulle proclaimed Algeria independent in July 1962, after a referendum had shown ninety-one per cent of the Algerian people in favour of self-determination. It came after seven years of bitter fighting and bombing.

The Algerian President Houari Boumedienne has attended the event since it was started. But this year he had to take part in a Ministerial Council meeting in the city of Constantine, studying the special problems of Eastern Algeria.

Torch-carrying Olympic runners circled the stadium -- and the Olympic oath was taken by the runners and the youth movements.

Then the Olympic flame was lit.

Among the youth movements taking part were the Young FLN Party. It was the FLN -- the Muslim Front de Liberation Nationale, which led the armed rebellion against the French in November 1954. But the theme of the Festival was Algeria's Agrarian Revolution and young people who are helping it showed how peasants had been emancipated since colonial days.

Last month the first private land nationalised by the Government was handed over to poor peasant.
