    A TWO-DAY CONFERENCE OF FOUR AFRICAN AIRLINES OPENED IN ACCRA ON MONDAY (DECEMBER 12) TO DISCUSS FORMING A TRANS-AFRICA AIRLINE POOL. REPRESENTATIVES OF GHANA AIRWAYS, EAST AFRICAN AIRWAYS, NIGERIAN AIRWAYS AND ETHIOPIAN WERE PRESENT.

    IN HIS OPENING ADDRESS, THE CHAIRMAN OF THE GHANA AIRWAYS CORPORATION, MR. E.H. BOOHENE, CALLED ON PARTICIPANTS TO WORK TOWARDS THE DAY WHEN AFRICAN AIRWAYS WOULD HAVE A MONOPOLY ON THE CONTINENT.

    MR BOOHENE CALLED ON THE AIRWAYS TO PUT THEIR RESOURCES TOGETHER FOR TRAFFIC, EQUIPMENT AND MAINTENANCE, AND MAKE THE AFRICAN AIRLINE INDUSTRY VIABLE TO AVOID DOMINATION BY FOREIGN CARRIERS.

    AIR CONGO WAS REPRESENTED BY AN OBSERVER.

    WHEN THE CONFERENCE ENDED TODAY (WEDNESDAY) A COMMUNIQUE WAS ISSUED ANNOUNCING THAT THE AIRLINES HAD AGREED TO ESTABLISH A TRANS-AFRICAN EAST-WEST POOL ROUTE FROM NEXT APRIL 1. NO DETAILS OF THE POOL ROUTE WERE GIVEN, AND THE STATEMENT SAID THE PLAN WAS SUBJECT TO RATIFICATION BY THE GOVERNMENTS INVOLVED BEFORE COMING INTO EFFECT.
