  • Description

ALL EUROPEAN OFFICES, SHOPS, AND CAFES IN ALGIERS, ALGERIA, CLOSED SUDDENLY AT 11 A.M. ON JAN 26, IN RESPONSE TO A GENERAL STRIKE ORDER BY THE O.A.S. (ORGANISATION OF THE SECRET ARMY.)
THE STRIKE WAS A PROTEST AGAINST THE ACTION OF THE AUTHORITIES IN BLOCKING ABOUT 300 YARDS OF THE RUE MICHELET, THE CITY'S MAIN ARTERY, TO CIVILIAN TRAFFIC. A DELEGATION OF SHOP KEEPERS FROM THE STREET SAID THEY WOULD NOT PAY TAXES UNLESS THE BAN WAS LIFTED. THEY ALSO UNSUCCESSFULLY APPEALED FOR A 9 P.M. CURFEW ON AUTOMOBILE TRAFFIC IN THE STREET TO BE LIFTED, CLAIMING THESE SECURITY RESTRICTIONS WERE DAMAGING BUSINESS.

AFTER THE SHOPS AND OFFICES CLOSED AND EUROPEAN EMPLOYEES APPEARED IN THE STREETS, TROOPS AND ADDITIONAL POLICE MOVED INTO THE CITY TO JOIN THOSE ALREADY GUARDING OFFICIAL BUILDINGS. TROOP CARRIERS WITH MACHINE GUNS RUMBLED DOWN STREETS, BY NOW EMPTY OF MOSLEMS.

EARLIER IN THE DAY, THREE MEN DROVE TO A SCHOOL IN THE SUBURB OF KOUBA, WALKED INTO A CLASSROOM, AND SHOT A MOSLEM DEAD IN FRONT OF HIS PUPILS. A BOY OF 12 WAS ALSO INJURED. LATER ANOTHER GROUP RAIDED IN ALGIERS HOSPITAL TO RESCUE AN ARRESTED MAN. THE ESTIMATED DEATH ROLL FROM TERRORIST ATTACKS IN ALGERIA FOR THE DAY WAS 13 DEAD AND 21 WOUNDED, BRINGING THE TOTAL SINCE JAN 1, TO 471 DEAD AND 892 WOUNDED.
