Before a delighted home crowd Leeds United today (Saturday, 7 October) thrashed English Soccer League champions Derby County by five goals to nil.

Leeds' first goal came in the third minutes after Derby captain Roy McFarland - who was booked for the fifth time this season - headed a Peter Lorimer free-kick straight to Johnny Giles. who made no mistake with a first-time 25-yard shot at goal.

Within half-an-hour Giles - who had been a doubtful starter - collected a rebound, again outside the Derby penalty area, and again crashed the ball into the net with another unstoppable shot.

Derby attacks were easily broken up, and goal number three for Leeds came from a typical Clarke header, after superb team approach work.

Giles went off injured in the second half but it didn't stop the goals coming. Captain Willy Bremner scored the fourth, and just before the final whistle Peter Lorimer made the total five.

Derby had no answer - either on the field or on the score-board.
