    CHOLERA HAS CLAIMED 982 LIVES IN CALCUTTA THIS YEAR, ACCORDING TO FIGURES ANNOUNCED LAST NIGHT (TUESDAY).LAT WEEK, 146 PEOPLE DIED FROM THE DISEASE, AGAINST 200 THE PREVIOUS WEEK.MORE THAN 3,000 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN INFECTED.

    THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE ARE BEING INOCULATED, BUT OTHERS, PARTICULARLY IN THE TEEMING SLUM DISTRICTS WHERE THE DISEASE IS RIFE, HAVE BEEN EVADING INOCULATION.THE AUTHORITIES ARE WORKING ROUND THE CLOCK TO IMPROVE HYGIENE.A CHLORINATION PLANT BEGAN OPERATING ON SUNDAY LESS THAN FOUR HOURS AFTER ESSENTIAL PARTS HAD BEEN RUSHED FROM BRITAIN.

    WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION OFFICIALS SAID THAT ADEQUATE CHLORINATION WOULD ENSURE AT LEAST 70 PER CENT SAFETY AGAINST CHOLERA.THE MAIN SOURCE OF THE DISEASE HAS BEEN UNFILTERED WATER.

    ONE OF THE BIGGEST PROBLEMS HAS BEEN THE CHOKED SURFACE DRAINS IN UNSEWERED AREAS.WATER SAMPLES FROM THE GANGES AND HOOGHLY RIVERS HAVE CONTAINED CHOLERA GERMS.FLIES, TOO, HAVE BEEN GERM CARRIERS, INFECTING FOOD PREPARED BY INDIANS IN THE OPEN STREETS.THE GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN DESTROYING FOOD PREPARED IN THE OPEN FOR SALE TO SHOPS.

    OTHER PARTS OF THE ORIENT HAVE ALSO BEEN HIT BY CHOLERA.SINGAPORE LAST WEEKEND WAS DECLARED A CHOLERA INFECTED AREA.FIVE PEOPLE HAVE DIED IN MALACCA, ON THE MAINLAND OF MALAYA, WHILE 59 HAVE DIED IN MOULMEIN, SOUTHERN BURMA, AND THREE CASES HAVE BEEN ADMITTED TO A RANGOON HOSPITAL.
