Background: Canvassing activities for the May 30 general elections were recently filmed in Singapore.

Founded in 1819 by Sir Stamford Raffles the British colony of Singapore is now looking ahead to becoming a state with full internal government. After the forthcoming elections to decide which of the parties is going to wield power in Cabinet and Legislative Assembly, the Governor of Singapore Sir William Goode will set a date enforcing the new constitution and status of the colony. Observers believe it may be June 1.

Meanwhile, the struggle for votes continues. Outgoing Chief Minister Lim Yew Hock's governing Singapore People's Alliance, is severely hampered by party squabbles involving the Deputy Chief Minister; a financial scandal which led to the resignation of the Minister of Education; and the disintegration of the City Council.

Lim Yew Hock is trying his utmost to unify the moderate parties and to close ranks with Right Wing Liberal-Socialists, and Malayan Chinese organisations, against the extreme Left Wing People's Action Party. Secretary-General Lee Kuan Yew of the P.A.P. - present opposition party - has described his party as "democratic but not anti-Communist". Most observers think this party has the best chance of winning the election.

The P.A.P. is taking a more and more anti-European course. Their loudspeakers pour forth such sentences as "On Sunday we can open our windows and let in the wind of Asia which will blow away the white man for ever."
Many Europeans in Singapore have already moved their wives and children to the Federation of Malaya, others are planning to do so.
