  • Description

GREECE CELEBRATED ITS ENTRY INTO WORLD WAR TWO YESTERDAY WITH PARADES IN SALONIKA AND ATHENS AND A HINT FROM ITS MILITARY RULERS THAT A RETURN TO DEMOCRACY WAS STILL VERY DISTANT.

IN SALONIKA PREMIER GEORGE PAPADOPOULOS AND OTHER MEMBERS OF HIS CABINET ATTENDED A LARGE MILITARY PARADE OF THE GREEK ARMED FORCES.

THE THREE-DAY CELEBRATIONS OF "OCHI" DAY -- THE DAY IN 1940 WHEN GREECE REFUSED TO ACCEPT AN ULTIMATUM FROM ITALIAN FORCES POISED TO INVADE -- ENDED YESTERDAY.

AS PART OF THE CELEBRATIONS PREMIER PAPADOPOULOS, A FORMER ARTILLERY COLONEL WHO MASTERMINDED THE ARMY TAKEOVER IN 1967, ATTENDED A WAR VETERANS' DINNER IN ATHENS.

HE TOLD HIS AUDIENCE THAT HE INTENDED TO STAY IN POWER AS LONG AS WAS NEEDED TO FULFIL HIS MISSION AND HE CALLED ON THE PUBLIC TO CORRECT HIM BECAUSE, HE SAID, HE AND HIS COLLEAGUES WERE NOT FIGHTING FOR THEMSELVES BUT FOR GREECE.

DEPUTY PREMIER STYLIANOS PATTAKOS, THE FORMER TANK COMMADER WHO PLAYED A VITAL ROLE IN THE 1967 COUP, WARNED OPPONENTS OF THE REGIME THAT THEY WOULD STAY BANISHED LONG ENOUGH TO FORGET THE GREEK LANGUAGE.
