    The West German town of Inzell in Bavaria was host at the weekend (6-7 March) to sixteen of the world's top speedway riders. The occasion was the world championship in the spectacular sport of speedway on ice. For this event the speedway motorcycles are fitted with tyres studded with metal spikes, and the riders wear additional protective steel kneeguards.

    Heats are run over four circuits of a 400-metre track, and speeds of up to 80 miles (125 km) per hour are reached on the straight.

    Winner was the Soviet rider Gabtrahman Kadyrov, with his compatriot Vladimir Chekushev in second place. Miroslav Spinka of Czechoslovakia was third.
