  • Description

West African leaders began a crucial summit meeting in Lagos -- Nigeria's capital -- on Tuesday (27 May) which will pave the way for the establishment of a West African Common Market.

The Nigerian Head of State, General Yabuku Gowon -- a prime mover of the proposed Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) -- presided over the summit.

The formal opening ceremony was attended by 11 Heads of State, two Prime Ministers and two high-powered delegations.

Fifteen English and French-speaking West African states will be linked in the new community, which -- like the European Economic Community -- is designed to standardise tariffs and trade procedures among member States.

A draft treaty was prepared in Ghana last year and later endorsed by Foreign Ministers at a meeting in Liberia.

The treaty will be formally initialled at the Lagos summit.
