  • Description

MORE THAN 100,000 PEOPLE STOOD IN POURING RAIN TO WELCOME COLONEL JOHN GLENN - FIRST AMERICAN IN ORBIT - WHEN HE ARRIVED IN WASHINGTON FEB. 26 TO DESCRIBE HIS HISTORIC FLIGHT - THREE TIMES ROUND THE WORLD FEB. 20 - TO A JOINT MEETING OF CONGRESS.

COLONEL GLENN AND HIS FAMILY HAD FLOWN IN WITH PRESIDENT KENNEDY FROM PALM BEACH AND WERE DRIVEN TO THE WHITE HOUSE. THERE HE WAS GIVEN THE KEY TO THE CITY OF WASHINGTON.

WITH MR. LYNDON JOHNSON, THE U.S. VICE-PRESIDENT, COLONEL GLENN RODE IN AN OPEN CAR FROM THE WHITE HOUSE TO CAPITOL HILL. HIS WIFE ANNIE AND THEIR CHILDREN, DAVID, 16, AND LYN, 14, WERE IN THE SAME CAR. PRECEDED BY MOUNTED POLICE AND A MARINE BAND, WITH OTHER BANDS STATIONED ALONG THE ROUTE, THEY WAVED TO THE THOUSANDS HUDDLED UNDER UMBRELLAS. THE POLICE CHIEF SAID IT WAS THE BIGGEST WASHINGTON CROWD HE HAD SEEN, EVEN ON PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURATION DAYS.

AFTER AN INTRODUCTION BY THE SPEAKER, MR. JOHN W. MCCORMACK, COLONEL GLENN TOLD CONGRESS THAT WE WERE ON THE BRINK OF AN ERA OF NEW KNOWLEDGE WHICH WAS BEYOND DESCRIPTION; THE REAL BENEFITS PROBABLY WERE NOT KNOW TO MAN TODAY, BUT EXPLORATION AND THE PURSUIT OF KNOWLEDGE PAID DIVIDENDS ANNUALLY FAR GREATER THAN ANYTHING EXPECTED AT THE OUTSET. OUR EFFORTS TODAY WERE BUT SMALL BUILDING BLOCKS IN A HUGE PYRAMID - SCRATCHES ON THE SURFACES ON THE GREATEST ADVANCE IN MAN'S KNOWLEDGE THAT HAD EVER BEEN MADE.
