  • Description

A Cypriot man and an Italian girl were killed outside the American Embassy in Athens today (Wednesday September 2) when a bomb exploded in their car. The Greek Public Order Ministry claimed that the couple were seeking an opportunity to plant the bomb when it exploded.

The Greek Police identified the two victims as George Tsekouris, 25, a Cyriot believed to be studying in Italy, and Maria Angeloni, 31, a secretary from Italy.

The Ministry of Public Order said the couple drove up to the Embassy in a blue Volkswagen car. They drove several times around the Embassy, apparently seeking an opportunity to plant the bomb -- a home-made time-bomb -- in the building or in the garden.

The car finally stopped in the Embassy car park and minutes later was blown apart. The explosion threw the man clear of the car. Other cars in the car park were wrecked and windows at the rear of the Embassy broken.

Police believe the car belonged to a Swedish woman who had lent it to the couple. They had been in Greece for nearly a month and planned to leave today. No underground organisation has claimed responsibility for the explosion.
