  • Description

BRITISH M.Ps. SIR JOHN BARLOW (CONSERVATIVE MEMBER FOR LANCASHIRE) AND LABOUR MEMBER FOR JARROW MR. E. FERNYHOUGH ARE ON THE SMALL ISLAND, POPULARLY CALLED THE TURTLE ISLAND OFF THE WEST COAST OF SARAWAK. THEY WERE AMONG A DELEGATION OF FOUR BRITISH MPs WHO VISITED BRUNEI, NORTH BORNEO AND SARAWAK IN SEPTEMBER, AND ARE ACCOMPANIED ON THIS TRIP BY THE BRITISH RESIDENT IN SARAWAK.

TOM HARRISON, THE CURATOR OF SARAWAK MUSEUM AND ADMINISTRATOR OF THE ISLAND, SNOWS THEM THE "HATCHING ENCLOSURE" WHERE EDIBLE GREEN TURTLE (CHELONIA MYDAS) EGGS ARE "REPLANTED".

TURTLE EGGS X TAKE ABOUT 55 DAYS TO HATCH, AND BABY TURTLES ARE ABOUT THE SIZE OF THE PALM.

THE YOUNG ONES ARE THEN KEPT IN THE TANKS FOR ABOUT TWO MONTHS (BEFORE BEING RELEASED) BY WHICH TIME THEY DEVELOP A HARD PROTECTIVE COVER AND ARE CAPABLE OF SAVING THEMSELVES FROM BEING CAUGHT BY FISH OR CRABS. BUT IT IS EIGHT YEARS BEFORE THEY BECOME PRODUCTIVE - BY LAYING EGGS.

THIS ARRANGEMENT PROTECTS THE TURTLES AND PREVENTS THEIR EXTINCTION, LIKE IN THE WEST INDIES WHERE SCIENTISTS REPORT THAT THE SPECIES ARE NEAR EXTINCTION.

THE LIFE EXPECTANCY OF A TURTLE IS SOME 40-50 YEARS.

THE EGGS ARE OBTAINED FROM TURTLES WHICH TURN OF ONCE EVERY FIVE YEARS WITH A MYSTERIOUS REGULARITY TO LAY THEIR EGGS, ON THE BEACHES OF THIS QUIET ISLAND. THEY CRAWL OUT OF THE SEA DURING NIGHT AND AT HIGH TIDE, CHOOSE A QUIET SITE FOR THEIR NEST. AND WITH THEIR FLIPPERS THEY DIG A DEEP DEPRESSION AND THEN A SHAFT FOUR FEET DEEP INTO THE SAND, AND THERE IN LAY THEIR EGGS. AN ADULT TURTLE LAYS AN AVERAGE OF 106 EGGS AT A TIME AND FOUR OF FIVE TIMES A YEAR, THUS AVERAGING 500 EGGS A YEAR. DURING THIS DELICATE PROCESS, THE TURTLES ARE SHY OF NOISE, LIGHTS OR OTHER DISTURBANCES BUT IF THERE ARE ANY. THERE IS VERY LITTLE THEY COULD DO ABOUT IT.

INVESTIGATIONS HAVE PROVED TEAT AFTER THE EGG LAYING DURING THE SEASON, THEY DISAPPEAR FOR FOUR TO FIVE YEARS. THIS WAS CONFIRMED BY TAGGING THE TURTLES WHICH TURNED UP WITH THE SAME REGULATORY - FOUR OR FIVE YEARS, AND IT IS NOT KNOWN WHERE THEY GO DURING THIS INTERVENING PERIOD.

HAVING LAID THE EGGS, THE TURTLES COVER THE NESTS WITH SAND AND CRAWL CLUMSILY BACK IN TO THE SEA.

BUT TURTLE EGG IS BIG BUSINESS IN THIS TINY ISLAND AND WATCHMEN HAVE FLAGGED THE PLACES WHICH ARE REGULARLY DUG UP THE NEXT MORNING. IN THIS ISLAND CALLED TALANG TALANG KEOHIL, A MILLION EGGS ARE LAID EVERY YEARS - THREE QUARTERS OF THEM DURING THE AUGUST-SEPTEMBER SEASON. THESE EGGS ARE COLLECTED BY THE TURTLE BOARD AND SOLD, THE PROFITS GOING TO MALAY CHARITIES LIKE BUILDING OR REPAIRING MOSQUES ETC.

A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF EGGS IS REPLANTED EVERY YEAR IN THE PROTECTED AREA TO KEEP UP THE SPECIES AND PREVENT POSSIBLE EXTINCTION.
