The finest flower attracts several hundred people monthly in Sydney to an auction where bulbs of the orchid are sold. This weekend the early flowering varieties came under the hammer.
The orchid has fourteen flowers, quite apart from being the "flower of the future". The prospective buyers were professional growers, or people who rear the flowers for a hobby. The auctioneer -- Mr. J. H. WEST -- is a prominent grower himself. The orchid he commends so highly is a "Constance Variety Barbara". For it, competition was so keen and brisk, bidding quickly reached the thirty-pound mark.
Another Constance Variety Barbara fetched thirty-seven-pounds. They're believed to be the finest early flowering orchids ever seen in AUSTRALIA. Yesterday some were flown to SAN FRANCISCO for an embassy reception -- orchids from Sydney.
