In 1969 Visnews serviced film of the first of these barge or lighter-carrying ships, the "Arcadia Forest", docking at Rotterdam. This was in Production Number X10439/69.
The barge-ships will probably have labour problems similar to those experienced with normal container-vessels. The container-ship "Jervis Bay" was held up at the U.K. port of Tilbury for a year by such labour problems, and the story was covered in our Production Number X5176/70.
SYNOPSIS: A new barge-carrying freighter called the "Lash Italia", which made its maiden voyage recently from New Orleans to New York, is said to be an improvement on the container ships which have already caused a revolution in cargo shipping.
The LASH in the ship's name stands for 'lighter aboard ship', a lighter being a small barge. The improvement on containers is that the barges can be dropped into the water, towed to various points for cargo, and brought back to a centralised point.
The ship's 500-ton gantry crane runs on tracks, and it can unload one barge every fifteen minutes. The "Lash Italia" can carry 73 of the barges, which rest above and below decks. It is almost as long as the "Queen Mary", and can carry three times as much cargo as the conventional freighter.
The conventional freighter has a turn-around time of about three days, but this ship can enter harbour, unload and re-load in about seven hours.
She was ready for her maiden trip in November, but was held up as container ships have been before her, by labour problems. She carries only 38 crew, and the unions fear that more like her will mean less jobs for their workers.
