VISNEWS May 29 filmed President Tomas of Portugal opening the British Trade Fair, Lisbon. After inspecting a British military Guard of Honour, the President toured the show showing keen interest in many exhibits, notably the modern British cars on show.
The Fair, largest event of its kind ever to be held in Portugal, is to be visited by Princess Margaret during her private visit to Lisbon early in June. A supporting event will be an Angle-Portuguese tattoo, commemorating the ancient alliance between the two countries. Royal Navy units, including an aircraft carrier, will be visiting Lisbon during the Fair.
Also present at the opening, sponsored by the Federation of British Industries, was Sir David Eccles, President of the Board of Trade.
The Trade Fair, open until June 14, is aimed at restoring Britain's position as Portugal's chief foreign supplier and best customer. West Germany recently became Portugal's main foreign supplier, although Britain has been taking a larger proportion of Portuguese exports than Germany in recent years.
President Tomas expressed gratitude for British co-operation in Portugal's GBP375 million economic development plan. Among British goods supplied to Portugal; hospital equipment; radio and TV receivers; textiles and heavy transport vehicles.
