    SKIN-DIVERS, HELICOPTERS AND RESCUE CRAFT JOINED YESTERDAY AFTERNOON (MONDAY) IN FEVERISH EFFORTS TO RESCUE POSSIBLE SURVIVORS AMONG 11 PEOPLE, MOSTLY YOUNG AMERICAN NURSES, TRAPPED WHEN A BUS PLUNGED INTO NEW YORK'S EAST RIVER.

    OFFICIALS SAID LATER THAT FOUR PEOPLE SURVIVED, SIX BODIES WERE FOUND AND ONE PERSON WAS MISSING, BELIEVED TRAPPED BELOW THE WATER.

    MR RICHARD HASS, 36, A PHYSIOTHERAPIST AND ONE OF THE SURVIVORS, SAID: "I SAW SOMETHING HAD HAPPENED TO THE DRIVER AND I GRABBED THE WHEEL, BUT IT WAS TOO LATE. AS THE BUS HIT THE WATER I PRAISED OPEN THE FRONT DOORS. I MANAGED TO GET THROUGH AND DRAGGED OUT A WOMAN AFTER ME".

    THE DISASTER HAPPENED ON WELFARE ISLAND, A SMALL ISLAND OFF MIDTOWN, MANHATTAN, AND DREW THOUSANDS OF SPECTATORS TO THE MANHATTAN AND LONG ISLAND SHORES. THE NURSES WERE ON THEIR WAY BACK TO WORK FROM LUNCH.
