PRESIDENT KENNEDY AND MR. HAROLD MACMILLAN HAVE OPENED THEIR CRUCIAL TALKS IN THE BAHAMAS ON?

  • Description

PRESIDENT KENNEDY AND MR. HAROLD MACMILLAN HAVE OPENED THEIR CRUCIAL TALKS IN THE BAHAMAS ON WORLD PROBLEMS. EARLY REPORTS TODAY (WEDNESDAY) INDICATED THAT THE SKYBOLT MISSILE CONTROVERSY WAS TOP ITEM ON THE AGENDA.

YESTERDAY, A SMILING MR.MACMILLAN WELCOMED PRESIDENT KENNEDY TO THE TOURIST PARADISE ISLAND AND TOLD HIM HE HOPED THEIR TALKS WOULD BE EFFECTIVE AND FRUITFUL.

THE BRITISH PREMIER GREETED THE U.S. PRESIDENT WITH A WARM HANDSHAKE WHEN HE FLEW IN FROM WASHINGTON FOR THE SIXTH MEETING BETWEEN THE TWO STATESMAN IN TWO YEARS. THE TALKS, SCHEDULED TO LAST TWO DAYS, ARE TAKING PLACE DURING ONE OF THE MOST CRITICAL PHASES IN THE POST-WAR HISTORY OF THE ANGLO-AMERICAN ALLIANCES.

WHAT WAS PLANNED AS A RELAXED "TOUR D'HORIZON" OF WORLD ISSUES HAS CHANGED TO AN UNHAPPY CONTROVERSY OVER A MISSILE -- THE SKYBOLT -- WHICH MIGHT LEAVE DEEP SCARS UNLESS IT ENDS WITH A SOLUTION ACCEPTABLE TO BRITAIN.

MR. KENNEDY AND MR. MACMILLAN GREETED EACH OTHER WARMLY AT NASSAU AIRPORT YESTERDAY, BUT DIPLOMATIC OBSERVERS STRESSED THE GRAVITY WITH WHICH THE BRITISH PREMIER VIEWED THE REPORTED U.S. INTENTION TO ABANDON THE MISSILE ON WHICH BRITAIN IS RELYING FOR HER CONTINUED ROLE AS A NUCLEAR POWER.

IN THE TARMAC WELCOMING PARTY, WERE LORD HOME, BRITISH FOREIGN SECRETARY, AND MR. PETER THORNYCROFT. MR.MACMILLAN SPOKE AT THE AIRPORT OF THE CLOSE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN BRITAIN AND THE UNITED STATES, AND SAID MEETINGS HE HAD HELD WITH MR. KENNEDY AND PREVIOUS U.S. PRESIDENTS HAD BEEN OF THE GREATEST VALUE.

PRESIDENT KENNEDY REPLIED: "I AM NOT SURE THE WORLD IS SO MUCH BETTER OFF AFTER OUR PREVIOUS MEETINGS, BUT I FEEL THAT AS PRESIDENT I HAVE BEEN BETTER OFF AND HAVE BENEFITED GREATLY FROM THE COUNSEL AND FRIENDSHIP YOU HAVE SHOWN ME."
THE TWO LEADERS THEN DROVE OFF FOR LYFORD CAY RESIDENTIAL CLUB, A LUXURY HOLIDAY RETREAT ON THE ATLANTIC SHORE NEARA NASSAU WHERE THEY ARE STAYING IN ADJOURNING VILLAS.

A FEW HOURS EARLIER, MR. MACMILLAN AND LORD HOME HAD FLOWN IN AT NIGHT FROM LONDON AND WERE GREETED BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE BAHAMAS.
