    THE FOURTH REGIONAL CONFERENCE FOR AFRICA OF THE FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANISATION (FAO) WAS OPENED IN ABIDJAN ON WEDNESDAY BY THE IVORY COAST'S MINISTER OF STATE, M. AUGUSTE DENISE.

    DELEGATIONS FROM SOME 20 AFRICAN COUNTRIES AND OBSERVERS FROM BRITAIN AND FRANCE ARE ATTENDING THE 10-DAY CONFERENCE WHICH WILL DISCUSS MARKETING OF AGRICULTURE, MEANS TO AVOID WASTE, PLANNING AND THE ROLE OF AGRICULTURE IN INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT.

    THE FAO'S DIRECTOR-GENERAL, MR RAJAN BINAY SEN, TOLD THE OPENING SESSION THAT FOOD PRODUCTION IN AFRICA IN 1965-66 WAS LOWER THAN THE POPULATION INCREASE.

    HE SAID THE FAO PROPOSED A PROGRAMMED TO COST 500-MILLION DOLLARS (GBP180-MILLION STERLING) TO AID AFRICAN FOOD PRODUCTION.

    MR RAJAN BINAY SEN HAS BEEN MADE A GRAND OFFICER OF THE NATIONAL ORDER OF IVORY COAST. THIS WAS ANNOUNCED BY M. AUGUSTE DENISE WHEN HE OFFICIALLY GOT THE CONFERENCE UNDERWAY.

    HE SAID THE AWARD WAS IN RECOGNITION OF MR SEN'S OUTSTANDING SERVICES TO THE CAUSE OF AFRICAN AGRICULTURE.

    LATER AT THE FIRST SESSION, THE MEMBER OF THE GHANAIAN LIBERATION COUNCIL IN CHARGE OF AGRICULTURE, MR J. E. O. NUNOO, PROPOSED THAT AFRICAN STATES SET UP A COMMON INTERNATIONAL AGENCY FOR THE MARKETING OF THEIR PRODUCE.

    HE SAID THE CREATION OF A UNITED FRONT IN TRADE WITH OTHER CONTINENTS WAS NECESSARY TO AVOID WHAT HE CALLED A DEFEAT IN THE MATTER OF AFRICAN PRODUCTION.
