    ON THE SECOND DAY OF HIS VISIT TO UGANDA, POPE PAUL YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) MADE HIS FIRST MAJOR APPEARANCE BEFORE AFRICAN ROMAN CATHOLICS WHEN HE HELD MASS AT AN OPEN-AIR CEREMONY IN THE SPECIALLY-CONSTRUCTED ALTAR ERECTED ON THE FORMER AIRSTRIP AT KOLOLO TERRACE. LATER HE ATTENDED A SPECIAL SESSION OF THE UGANDA PARLIAMENT; FOLLOWED BY MEETINGS WITH AFRICAN HEADS OF STATE, FEDERAL NIGERIA'S NEGOTIATOR CHIEF ENAHORO AND BIAFRAN LEADERS - IN AN EFFORT TO TRY TO FIND A SOLUTION TO THE NIGERIAN CIVIL WAR.

    AT KOLOLO, THE CEREMONIES WHERE ATTENDED BY SOME 100,000 PEOPLE WHO HAD COME FROM ALL OVER EAST AFRICA - ONE GROUP OF 22 HAD WALKED 200 MILES (320 KMS) FROM THE SMALL VILLAGE OF GULU, MANY FAINTED AND COLLAPSED FROM HEAT AND EXHAUSTION DURING THE LONG CEREMONY IN WHICH 50 BISHOPS, 100 PRIESTS AND 22 ALTAR BOYS TOOK PART. DURING THE CEREMONY, POPE PAUL ALSO CONSECRATED 12 NEW BISHOPS FROM UGANDA, KENYA, NIGERIA, CAMEROON, GABON, UPPER VOLTA AND ZAMBIA.

    HEADS OF STATE FROM SEVERAL AFRICAN NATIONS WERE ALSO PRESENT AT THE KOLOLO MASS.

    AFTER LEAVING KOLOLO, POPE PAUL DROVE TO THE UGANDA PARLIAMENT, WHERE HE ADDRESSED THE MEMBERS AND OTHER LEADING GUESTS AND SPOKE OF THE NIGERIAN CONFLICT: "WE HAVE NOT ONLY SOUGHT TO SECURE GOOD AND MEDICAL ASSISTANCE, IMPARTIALLY AND BY EVERY MEANS AVAILABLE TO US, BUT HAVE ALSO TRIED TO APPLY THE REMEDY OF A CERTAIN INITIAL RECONCILIATION. UP TO NOW WE HAVE NOT SUCCEEDED AND THIS GIVES US HEARTFELT PAIN - BUT WE ARE RESOLVED TO CONTINUE OUR MODEST AFFECTIONATE AND FAIR EFFORTS OF PERSUASION TO HEAL THIS FATAL DISSENSION".

    LATER, HE IS REPORTED TO HAVE CARRIER HIS WORDS INTO PRACTICES BY HOLDING LONG MEETINGS WITH PROFESSOR ENI NJOKU - CONSIDERED BIAFRA'S CHIEF NEGOTIATOR AND WITH FEDERAL NIGERIA'S NEGOTIATOR, CHIEF ENAHORO. POPE PAUL ALSO HELD TALKS WITH PRESIDENTS JULIUS NYERERE OF TANZANIA, KENNETH KAUNDA OF ZAMBIA, MICHAEL MICOMBERO OF BURUNDI, GREGOIRE KAYIBANDA OF RWANDA, AND HIS HOST, UGANDA'S PRESIDENT MILTON OBOTE, IN AN EFFORT TO GET THEM TO MEDIATE IN THE NIGERIAN CONFLICT.
